Shopping for Home Appliances? Use the Kenya Energy Label to Choose the Best Product

When you’re shopping for a new appliance, look for the Kenya Energy Label, the red and green tag you will see attached to refrigerators and air conditioners. It tells how much energy an appliance uses and makes it easier to compare the energy use of similar models. The more stars on the label means the more energy efficient an appliance is, the less it costs to run, and the lower your utility bills might be. Using less energy is good for the environment, too; it can reduce air pollution and help conserve natural resources.

It’s easy to use! More stars means more energy and cost savings!

Do all appliances have Kenya Energy Labels?

No. Air conditioners, refrigerators/freezers and induction motors are the only appliances on the market with the market with a Kenya Energy Label. Over the next few years, more appliances like lights and other motors will begin using the label.

How much money will I save per month with a higher star rated appliance?

A lot! Depending on the appliance type and how many stars it has, one can save hundreds of shillings on the monthly electricity bill.

What if there isn’t a Kenya Energy Label on an appliance?

Refrigerators/freezers, air conditioners and induction motors products that have been in retail shops before the mandatory Kenya Energy Label program began will not have the label. If you have any questions about a specific appliance model, reach out to EPRA for clarifications.

Are all Kenya Energy Labels the same?

Your Shopping Strategy

Ready to shop? Remember to:

  1. Measure: You need a space that’s large enough for the appliance, allows you to open the appliance door or lid fully and provides enough clearance for safe ventilation.
  2. Compare performance: Decide which features are important to you, and ask how various models operate: Are they noisy? What safety features do they have? What are their repair histories? How much electricity do they use? Product reviews from experts may be helpful. Customers’ online reviews can help you spot common complaints. Search for the company or product name with words like “review” or “complaint.” Read reviews from several sources.
  3. Look at the energy use: Use the Kenya Energy Label to compare the energy use of similar models. Using an energy efficient appliance can make a big difference on your utility bills during the life of the appliance. Spending less on utility costs might balance out paying a bit more for an energy efficient model.
